Carriers slap emergency operation surcharges pertaining to Pakistan

Major carriers have slapped emergency operation surcharges pertaining to Pakistan as India no longer allows vessels which have picked up cargo in Pakistan to call Indian ports. One of the line’s Emergency Operation Surcharge (EOS) will be effective from May 19, 2025 (gate-in date) until further notice for all shipments from Pakistan to Europe, Africa, and to/from the Middle East and Indian Subcontinent, and from June 11, 2025 (gate-in date) until further notice for all shipments from Pakistan to the US. As per the restrictions imposed by India:

All containers originating from Pakistan, including empty units, in-transit (ROB), transhipment, and import cargo, are now strictly prohibited from entering Indian ports. * Vessels carrying Pakistan-origin cargo that departed prior to the implementation of the restriction will not be permitted to berth at Indian ports until such cargo is discharged at an alternate location. A container shipping expert said that overall, the pattern emerging is that while India retains its direct network connectivity to overseas ports, Pakistan’s connectivity is becoming reduced as a large amount of cargo now has to be transhipped. The India-Pakistan conflict, therefore, has the consequence of negatively impacting Pakistani supply chains much more than Indian supply chains, as per a report.
