description Acid oil, also known as fatty acid distillate or soapstock, is a byproduct generated during the refining of vegetable oils. It is formed as a result of the neutralization process where caustic soda is used to remove free fatty acids and impurities from crude vegetable oils. Acid oil contains a mixture of free fatty acids, triglycerides, phospholipids, sterols, and other impurities that are insoluble in water. Despite its name, acid oil is not inherently acidic but rather has a low pH due to the presence of free fatty acids. This byproduct is commonly utilized in various industries, including the production of soaps, detergents, and animal feed. In soap manufacturing, acid oil serves as a raw material for soap production due to its high content of fatty acids, which contribute to the cleansing properties of the soap. Acid oil can be further processed through distillation or esterification to recover valuable fatty acids for use in biodiesel production or as additives in industrial applications.
