With rising aluminum imports and the need for greater trade transparency, the Government of India has made AIMS (Aluminum Import Monitoring System) Registration mandatory for importers of aluminum and aluminum products. Introduced by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), AIMS ensures effective monitoring of aluminum imports while safeguarding domestic manufacturers from unfair trade practices. Whether you are importing primary aluminum, aluminum scrap, foils, sheets or finished products via air freight or sea freight, obtaining an AIMS Certificate and Unique Registration Number (URN) is essential before customs clearance. Non-compliance can result in shipment delays, port detention and financial losses.

Overview:

The AIMS is a compulsory online registration system implemented by DGFT for tracking imports of aluminum items notified under relevant ITC (HS) codes. Importers must generate a URN for each eligible consignment prior to filing out the Bill of Entry.

AIMS helps the government analyze import trends, monitor pricing, prevent dumping and maintain a level playing field for domestic aluminum producers. Without a valid AIMS registration, aluminum consignments may be held or rejected during customs clearance.

Benefits:

  • Smooth Customs Clearance: Prevents shipment holds by ensuring URN availability at the time of import.

  • Regulatory Compliance: Ensures adherence to DGFT import regulations and avoids penalties.

  • Trade Transparency: Helps monitor aluminum import volumes and pricing trends.

  • Risk Mitigation: Reduces chances of detention, demurrage and port storage charges.

  • Improved Credibility: Builds trust with customs authorities and trade partners.

Documents Required:

To apply for AIMS registration, the following documents are required:

  • Importer Exporter Code (IEC): Mandatory for all aluminum importers.

  • Digital Signature Certificate (DSC): For secure online application filing.

  • PAN & GST Registration: Business identification documents.

  • Proforma Invoice / Purchase Order: Mentioning quantity, value and supplier details.

  • Product Details: HS Code, aluminum grade, product description, country of origin.

  • Shipment Details: Expected port of arrival and mode of transport.

Fees and Timelines:

Understanding fees and timelines helps in effective import planning:

  • Registration Fee: ₹500 per application.

  • Application Window: Earliest: 60 days before expected arrival and latest: 5 days before shipment arrival.

  • URN Validity: 75 days from the date of issue.
