Overview:
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) introduced the hallmarking scheme for gold in 2000 and silver in 2005 to ensure purity and protect consumers from adulteration. A BIS hallmark is an official stamp that certifies the purity and authenticity of precious metals such as gold, silver, platinum and palladium.
In November 2019, the Government of India made BIS hallmarking for gold jewellery mandatory, effective from June 15, 2021. This regulation requires every jeweller or manufacturer to obtain a BIS Hallmark License before selling or manufacturing gold or silver ornaments.
By implementing this system, BIS ensures that consumers receive jewellery of certified purity and jewellers maintain compliance with Indian Standard IS 1417: 2016.
